Do you have a child who hides behind the curtains every time there are guests at home? Instead of greeting or mingling with them, he shies away or behaves queer. He has difficulty getting along with his peers and trouble in learning new things. Well, for parents who incessantly worry about how to make their autistic child independent and help them flourish academically and socially, Camp I CAN is the solution.

Now into its 13th year, Camp I CAN is the only camp in San Diego county exclusively modulated for kids and teens on the autism spectrum. Autism, as you know, is a developmental disability marked by impairments in social interaction, communication, and the manifestation of repetitive behaviors. A collaborative effort between the Autism Society San Diego, and the Toby Wells YMCA in Mission Valley and Palomar YMCA in Escondido, this special needs summer camp runs for a total of eight weeks each summer.

Camp I CAN is held at two locations:

Here, campers can not only enjoy daily field trips to places like Pump It Up, Belmont Park, Kearny Mesa Bowl, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Zoo, and Chuck E. Cheese, but also lap up some of life’s most important skills necessary for survival and being successful.

With its staff to camper ratio being as low as 3:2, this camp ensures maximum safety and encourages participation. Each camper is evaluated according to his/her needs and is provided a high level of experienced, knowledgeable supervision.

Registration for both locations of camp, Toby Wells and Palomar YMCA, is underway. To register or avail discounts, you must be a member of the Autism Society San Diego, be a San Diego county resident, and furnish a copy of the first page of your child’s IEP.

Depending on the site you plan to attend, either Toby Wells YMCA in San Diego or Palomar Family YMCA in Escondido, you must make your registration. For more information, please visit: www.autismsocietysandiego.org
