NBC Camps, formerly Northwest Basketball Camps, has grown to become the largest and most popular overnight basketball and volleyball program in the world. NBC Camps also provides instruction in soccer and football. Over the last 40 years, we have trained 250,000 athletes. Located in the U.S., Austria, Canada, UK and Italy, NBC Camps is dedicated to elevating personal excellence on and off the court. Our goal is to teach athletes how to compete with confidence, high skill level and intensity. NBC Camps began in 1971 as Northwest Basketball Camp. Founder Fred Crowell thought it a leap of faith to call it “Northwest” Basketball camp as he began the first Summer Camp held in Cusick, Washington, with 108 campers. Crowell, at the age of twenty-three became one of the youngest Division 1 coaches in America. Under his coaching, University of Alaska Fairbanks had its first winning season in the history of the college. He left Alaska and joined Campus Crusade for Christ as the first coach for Athletes in Action, a program facing top 20 teams night after night, sharing a message of community and wholeness, and developing into an exhibition team with one of the most wins in history. Crowell dreamed of a basketball camp that would train athletes to win both on and off the court. He wanted a program that would provide the best basketball training, create an atmosphere of encouragement, hard work, respect and compassion, and teach athletes to compete not only physically but with their hearts and minds. Coach Crowell combined his background of Division 1 coaching with his psychology background as a former family counselor. He wanted to give athletes an edge to physically, mentally and spiritually achieve the disciplined life of excellence. Many told Crowell his idea of combining athletics, faith and values were unrealistic. Now, 40 years later, Crowell’s dream has become reality as his vision has expanded to include multiple sports with over 10,000 athletes competing in NBC Camps programs around the world. DEVELOP PERMANENT CONFIDENCE THIS SUMMER
Getting better this summer requires intentional training, not only of your physical skills but also the training of your mind. This summer we hope you will make a goal to develop permanent confidence. What is permanent confidence? It is confidence that is unshakable.
Permanent confidence is something no one can take away because compliments do not inflate you and criticism cannot defeat you.
How do you develop permanent confidence?
- If possible, especially when developing a new skill, choose an encouraging environment. Not all environments are equal. The best place to grow is in an environment where you are given grace for mistakes, kind correction and courage to keep going. It’s possible to survive in Antarctica with harsh wind and violent weather, but it’s very tough and few make it. Similarly, confidence has a hard time becoming permanent in an environment of criticism, perfectionism and/or insult.
- Practice, practice, practice! The truly confident person loves hard work and is willing to do the work necessary to become great. The difference between a confident person and a cocky person is the confident person is open to looking at, talking about, and working on his or her weaknesses. When you have permanent confidence, you don’t become crushed by mistakes. You can grow and learn and even be thankful for mistakes because they will show you ways to improve.
- Remember, not all thoughts are equal. A person with permanent confidence doesn’t allow certain thoughts to have any time in his or her head. If they are destructive thoughts, they are not allowed entrance. Truly confident people understand each of us has a choice to think something or throw it out. In 2012, make developing permanent confidence a summer goal. As much as you can, get around people and programs that will build you up, not tear you down. Be willing to look at your weaknesses with hope and think great thoughts. Becoming more confident is a choice.
