Does your child aspire of becoming a rock band lyricist someday? Before you swing him towards his ambitions, know that this is one profession that requires massive talent, an abysmal understanding of music, impeccable English, perspective, perseverance, practice and inclination, among other things. But must importantly, it requires understanding of the job and a formal training in the same. To put it bluntly, writing rock lyrics is no child’s play, but with some guidance and training, your child too can become the next Bob Dylan or Jim Morrison.
Good news is that The Rock Band Experience is offering an intensive songwriting “crash course” this summer-break, designed to teach young students, aged 10 years and above, the fundamentals of writing music.
During the week-long crash course, students enrolling into the camp will have many opportunities to learn how to write original songs in any ensemble, using tried-and-tested formulas found throughout modern music. Not just that, even after the session, students are encouraged to work with their band through numerous performances as well as network with fellow youth musicians/ bands.
The summer intensive 2014 scheduled between June 2nd to August 29th, running 1 week each, from Monday to Friday and from noon to 4:00 will be hosted in the following venues — The Music Hall in Anaheim, The Music Factory in Costa Mesa, Backline Rehearsals at California, La Habra Yamaha Music School at La Habra, and Chino Hills Yamaha Music School at California.’
The day 1 of the intensive crash course will kick off with introduction to modern music followed by a deep individual analysis of what it takes to be a good rock lyricist. The fundamental objective of the program is to guide and encourage every child to draw his/her conclusions to every question posed during the sessions like “If ____ can write a hit song, why can’t I?” or “What is it about a song that gets me every time?”.
Each day of the session will kick off “The Lesson of The Day.” Be it a listening exercise, a lesson in song writing, recording techniques, or an analysis of a piece of music, the students will need to apply their days lesson to their composition.
Throughout the week, students will be taught how to successfully write a song using theory and techniques taught in the camp like — Fundamentals of Music, Diatonic and Non-diatonic Harmony, Thematic Development, Construction of Consonant Melodies, Tension and Resolution, Writing Solos, Song Structure and Form, Rhythmic Devices, Lyrical Devices, and Lyrical Meter — as well as from their own experiences. Be it a first-timer or someone enrolling into an already existing band, all students participating in this one week program get a through knowledge of how to write a hit song.
