At French Woods we have one of the most enterprising theater schedules in summer camping, producing more than 70 full-scale productions every summer. There are five theaters on camp, two black-boxes, a proscenium stage, a theater-in-the-round and a three-quarter-thrust stage. In fact, all theaters are equipped with sound and lighting systems and a technical crew that teaches and designs.
Moreover, Professional directors in the Summer Camp also teach classes in improvisation, acting technique, commercial technique, directing, dialects, musical theater, Shakespeare, stage combat, scene study and theatre games. Our Cabaret and Improvisation Troupes travel to nearby resorts and neighboring camps for performances. If you’re interested in technical theater you can take classes and get hands-on experience in stagecraft and design, lighting, sound, video, costuming and makeup.
Even, musicals like Evita perform with a full orchestra which is also made up of campers, and have the full support of our costume, sound, lighting and stagecraft departments.
French Woods is located on a private lake in the western Catskill Mountains of New York State near the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania Border. The camp is approximately two and a half hours from New York City, between Monticello and Binghamton.
The speciality about this summer camp is that Campers are able to focus on one particular area of interest, or they may choose to select a variety of our activities. Although they are a dance camp, theater camp, music camp, circus camp, magic camp, visual arts camp, film and video camp, sports camp, tennis camp, fitness camp, waterfront camp, skate board camp, rock and roll camp and horseback riding camp, we are also a camp that offers all the traditional camp activities that can be chosen a-la-carte and that each camper designs his or her own unique summer experience which cater to children from 7-17 years old.
