Fire erupts near Big Bear

A fire broke out at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday in the area around Jenks Lake, which is home to a number of summer camps operated by churches and the YMCA. Many people, who were at summer camps near Big Bear in the San Bernardino National Forest were evacuated, after a fire has burned about 50 acres.

The fire spread towards the east at a moderate speed. Officials said several structures were threatened. More than 100 personnel were deployed to contain the fire, which includes five air tankers and 11 fire engines.

Around 175 people were taken to Citrus Valley High School in Redlands. Most of them are from the Camp de Benneville Pines. They were hosting the theater-oriented Camp Bravo the camp’s website says. Others were from Camp Ta Pochon, Camp Alpine Meadows, Camp Edward and Camp Tulakes.

Cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation.
