We have a 135-acre campus with mountain views, and the Shenandoah River flows through the area. Our buildings are all air-conditioned, and we have multiple athletic fields, a picnic pavilion, and an indoor swimming pool.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What does your camp specialize in?” tab_id=”1489641476973-9e53225f-5ee1″][vc_column_text]Making learning fun! The classes we have each morning are enrichment classes, so there’s no anxiety about grades and tests. We strive to use a lot of activities, experiments, trips, discussions—whatever we can do to really engage the students and help them enjoy learning. We offer skills classes in math and study skills, and enrichment courses in digital media, history, science, reading and writing, and music technology. There’s enough variety there for students to take at least one class in something they really enjoy. Most campers will take at least one skills class the first time they come, but many of our campers have such a great time that they return the following year just to take enrichment classes. This year our theme for the camp is the American Presidents. That theme runs through some of the enrichment courses—reading and writing, science, and history. It’s fairly easy to understand how you can focus on the American Presidents while studying history, or in a class on reading and writing, but a lot of people scratch their heads at the idea of incorporating it into science. What those students will do is focus on Thomas Jefferson and his love for science, Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation era, and the science of assassination attempts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What activities do you offer?” tab_id=”1489147114089-cc047cc3-c1b2″][vc_column_text]The Randolph-Macon Academy Middle School Academic Summer Camp focuses on combining academics and fun. Students have three hours’ worth of classes in the morning and then move on to a variety of activities for the rest of the day. They have a mentoring time where they might focus on how to live with a roommate, or ways to get organized and stay organized. They might play some games in mentoring. After mentoring they head out for some organized fun. They might play ultimate Frisbee, basketball, flag football, volleyball—a whole range of sports. Or they could go for a hike, work on an art project, or perform some community service activities. They have a lot to choose from, so the students are able to try a variety of things and focus on the things they most enjoy or have always wanted to try. After some free time and dinner, they gather together again for some recreational activities. They might go swimming or bowling, or have a campfire right on the campus. Our session runs for four weeks, and at least three times during those four weeks we take the students on a field trip. Each year is different, but some of the places we have gone are Monticello, the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, the Marine Corps Museum, and Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre. We run both a day camp and a residential camp. The residential campers may choose to go home on the weekends, but if they elect to stay, then they go on our weekend trips to places like Busch Gardens, Hershey Park, the International Spy Museum, and water parks. We’ll even go whitewater rafting, and of course we go swimming. Day students who want to come back to campus and attend those weekend events are welcome to do so.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What are the typical session lengths and approximate pricing for your camp?” tab_id=”1488805694385-c9eb90d8-8e19″][vc_column_text]We have one session, and it is four weeks, from June 30th through July 26th. A residential camper pays $2,990 for tuition, room and board. There is also an estimated $990 personal account to cover the books and uniforms—we require our students to wear polo shirts and khaki shorts/pants most of the time. Students who attend every weekend trip might spend more, but we try to keep costs down as much as possible.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”How much staff do you have and how do you select your staff? ” tab_id=”1488805789916-e80715d9-957f”][vc_column_text]Summer Camp staff members are actually the same middle school teachers we have at our school during the regular school year. They are highly qualified, they love working with middle school-aged youth, and they have a passion for teaching. Teaching during the summer camp allows them to do some fun projects and activities that they might not have been able to fit into the curriculum during the regular school year, or to try a new project and see how the kids like it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Why should parents send their kids to your camp?” tab_id=”1488805831034-03374034-f024″][vc_column_text]There are studies that show that provide proof of the summer slump. In other words, a three-month summer vacation sound nice, but it means students spend almost a month trying to get back into the swing of things when school resumes in the fall. But of course no child wants to spend the summer in school. This is a perfect compromise. Students have fun and they learn, making the transition into the next grade easier. The best part about this camp is that a lot of campers discover a love for learning–even students who think they hate learning often change their mind. That’s because this is set up to be interactive, fun, and low-stress. They have responsibilities to fulfill by completing some assignments, and we do have some assessments of what they’ve learned, but the focus isn’t on the grades for the summer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”When does your camp enrollment start and finish?” tab_id=”1488805868856-26e5c1c9-8fbc”][vc_column_text]We are accepting applications now, and we will continue until we’re full or until June 27th, whichever comes first.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is the best way for parents to reach you to register for Camp?” tab_id=”1489493761949-f35fe73d-2de6″][vc_column_text]They actually need to contact our admission office at the Academy. That office can be reached Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 800-272-1172, or admission@rma.edu. Or, parents and campers can go online to rma.edu/summer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][/vc_row]
