YMCA Camp Abnaki has been a boy’s resident camp since 1901. Camp was founded by Byron Dad Clark who was the General Secretary for the Burlington YMCA.
We are located on 89 acres in the town of North Hero, VT. We are on the southern tip of North Hero Island in Lake Champlain.
Camp Abnaki provides a traditional boys sleep away summer camp program, with an emphasis on character development, skill building and fun. Boys are provided with an experience designed to foster personal growth and independence. The friendships they make and memories they take away last a lifetime.
We offer a variety of waterfront activities including: sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, fishing and row boats. Our land activities include soccer, skateboarding, tennis, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, baseball, arts and crafts, drama, dance, rock climbing, archery, and more. Situated in the middle of Lake Champlain, our sailing program is one of our strengths. The natural resources we have available and the variety of boats we have offer any sailor a chance to be challenged, have fun, and learn new skills.
We have two one week sessions and three two week sessions. A one week session will cost around $650 and a two week session will cost $1,100. Enrollment begins Novemeber 1 for the next summer. Sessions will begin to fill up in March. Our capacity is 142 campers a session. The best time to call and inquire about camp is January.
We have 65 staff. This includes 40 cabin counselors and 25 additional administrative/program, or support staff. We recruit the majority of our staff through our Counselor in Training Program. Other staff are recruited through local high schools, regional colleges, or international placement agencies.
Camp Abnaki gives young boys a chance to experience resident camp in a single sex environment. Boys can spend quality time with male role models who model cooperation, compassion, and empathy. Young boys learn that being masculine can mean you are sensitive, supportive, and respectful. A supportive Young boys learn how to be better friends, better boyfriends, better husbands, and better fathers.
Camp Abnaki is a program of the Greater Burlington YMCA. Approxiately 50% of our campers are from the Chittenden County area around Burlington. 70% are Vermonters and 6% are international. We also offer a variety of family programs each spring and fall.
